Since Paul and Elaine Wellings, and Elaine’s father John Curwen, took over Houghtons Filling Station
in 1994, they have grown it into a successful friendly family business.
Now entering their 30th year of trading, you can discover a wide range of pet food and garden supplies, boosted by the large display area next to the filling station. When they opened, they supplemented the filling station by selling bedding plants and hanging baskets – and over the years expanded to sell garden products including furniture, pots, garden ornaments, composts, grass seed, gardening tools, fence panels, trellises, and many other items. They also sell bark, top soil, shrubs, bedding plants and lawn fertilizers.
Houghton’s also stock animal, pet and poultry feeds, including layers pellets and mixed grain. Also feed for pigeons, caged birds, horses, rabbits and guinea pigs. Dog and cat brands include Arkwrights, Bakers, Beta, Burns, Dr John’s, Harringtons, James Wellbeloved, Pedigree, Skinner’s and Sneyd’s.
In winter they sell coal, calor gas, kindling and logs. At Christmas you can find a large display of Christmas decorations, artificial and real Christmas trees, and a large selection of indoor and outdoor lights.
