Car repairer Stuart McDonald prides himself on fantastic repairs – and that means having the latest technology. He bought a nitrogen plastic welder, meaning certain cracks can be welded, not replaced. “I’ve never seen anything like it,” he enthuses. “This can save customers a lot of money.”

Stuart, 61, used to run the UK’s biggest independent bodywork repair centre, Banks and Derbyshire, Preston, before selling up with his business partner in 2009.
Happier running a smaller business, Stuart employs 12 staff, including some from his old workforce of 130. He adds: “I can really look after people. I know exactly what’s going on with every car – down to every last spot weld – and it’s a great feeling.”
Stuart has all the equipment to ensure a perfect repair, including a £40,000 state-of-the-art JunAir Spray booth, reaching 65oC for baking paint. JSM has four, third year apprentices at JSM, being there since 15 and 16 years old, now specialising in their own areas.
He adds: “We do repairs on all makes and models, from the smallest scratch to the most severely damaged vehicles.”
They now also cover electric vehicles, shut down and restart, radar recalibration, adaptive cruise control and keyless entry. Stuart also handles light commercial and fleet repairs, plus all legal/insurance issues. “My legal team will risk-assess the claim in 2 hours to see if we can assist. My phone is always on.”
