They know friendly roofer Oliver Platt rather well in the Howick Park area of Penwortham – he’s re roofed 25 homes there in two years. “I started on one roof – they are tiled and in bad condition – and every roof since has been a recommendation. Neighbours stop and say “You’re on this street again!”
Oliver has not looked back since starting on his own more than nine years ago, his keen prices and pleasant manner winning enough work to employ three roofers. These days he specialises in full re-roofs for tiled and slate roofs, using breathable felt and British Standard battens. The felt, he said, allows roofs to breathe and avoids condensation, while the battens are treated and thicker, giving a better fixing. Common reasons for re-roofs are porous tiles and back-pointed slate roofs, where pointing falls off and prevents the attic being used.
Oliver, who has 13 years’ experience, trained in roofing after leaving Broughton High School and worked for a roofer in the Longton area before going it alone. Unlike many roofers, no job really is too big or small. “If there’s one slate off, it’s not a problem. I’m building a reputation and the more people who know I provide an excellent, reasonably priced quality service, the better.” There’s no better recommendation than word of mouth from a happy customer!”
Oliver’s skills include flat roofs, particularly GRP fibreglass roofing, chimney repairs and removal, roof repair work, leadwork, pointing and guttering. He also replaces fascia boards, soffits, gutters and installs dry-verge systems with maintenance-free UPVC plastic, in a range of colours. He says his prices are very competitive and that he will not be beaten on any like-for-like quote– ring for a free estimate.
Oliver stresses that he has a transparent, respectful approach. “I like to be polite and on time and am always honest with customers – I pride myself on not letting customers down and will turn up when I say I will. I often pick up other jobs around my work from neighbour recommendations,” he adds.
