Cheerful gas engineer Andy Herd is getting ever busier – thanks to his expertise and his manner with customers.
Formerly a highly paid North Sea oil job engineer, he resurrected his old business in 2015 after missing key events in his two young daughters’ lives due to long spells away. Andy wanted to see them grow up and former clients flocked back to the ex-Fulwood High School pupil. He repairs, services and installs gas boilers, gas fires and log burners, being both Gas Safe and HETAS registered.
He is now also a Baxi-approved installer. “Nothing defeats me,” he says. “If I can’t do something, I know a man on my phone who can.” Cheerful Andy, 39, has 22 years in the gas industry after training with well-known heating engineer Dave Newton, with whom he still co-operates on bigger jobs.
As well as boiler work – his “bread and butter” – he repairs and services gas fires, cookers and hobs and offers landlord gas safety certificates– he does a lot of work for estate agents. Unusually for a gas engineer, he is also qualified to install log burners and is expert at installing fires and fireplaces, having worked for fireplace firms.
Andy, who also offers general plumbing services, will do emergency call-outs “if people are desperate”.
