You’ll get a warm and friendly welcome at this gem of a club hidden away on your doorstep.
The beer’s cheap, activities are wide-ranging and there’s a new enthusiasm to greet newcomers and host community groups. “People don’t realise we’re here because you can’t see it easily from the road,” says committee member Janet Jackson. “but it’s a lovely building with a big garden, lots of space and plenty going on.”
The magnificent Victorian building is the former home of Booths supermarket founder, EH Booth. It houses a suite of rooms, available for functions and a beautiful bowling green. Janet said like many social organisations, the club has lost members to the virus and some have not yet ventured back. The committee and members worked hard over lockdown to redecorate and revamp much of the downstairs. “We want to open up on more nights, but we need a certain number coming in to make it worthwhile.”
The attractions are many – as barmaid Claire Kilban pointed out: “Our drinks prices are a bargain,” she said. “Our cheapest pint is £2.95 with Fosters and cask ale costing £3.15. A gin and tonic will set you back just £3.95.” The pool table, playable for free, is looking to host a pool team. It hosts a popular President’s Day in July, a garden party with food, bowling, children’s games and more. Functions such as birthdays, funerals and christenings, can also be hosted, with up to 80 people in the function room and more if the entire downstairs with a dance floor is hired. The club currently hosts groups such as stamp collectors and were always open to approaches from other organisations. She added: “We want to breathe a bit more life back into the place and would love to hear from you.”
